Saw is a horror franchise distributed by Lions Gate Entertainment that currently consists of six films with a seventh film shot in 3D and scheduled to be released in October 2010 which is anticipated as the last Saw film. The franchise began with the 2003 short film which was created by Australian director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell to pitch it as a potential feature film—which was successfully done in 2004 with the first feature film being released at the Sundance Film Festival and released theatrically the following October. The sequels were directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, David Hackl and Kevin, and have been released subsequently every October, on the Friday before Halloween.
Synopsis: As a deadly battle rages over Jigsaw's brutal legacy, a group of Jigsaw survivors gathers to seek the support of self-help guru and fellow survivor Bobby Dagen, a man whose own dark secrets unleash a new wave of terror.

The lighting is very high key. The background is white, and everything else is in grey apart from the iconic ‘Saw 3D’ logo. The poster takes a greyscale effect. There is only one character one the poster, the head of jigsaw, his NVC makes him look quite calm & relaxed & uninterested in the drama going on around him. We do not his full head clearly; his top half ( his mind) has been dismantled and looks broken, or like it has been smashed in with bits everywhere. That’s why his facial expression is rather comical. As I said we only see his head, so even if he is wearing any costume it is not shown, and the same for props, there aren’t any.
To the blind eye the poster seems quite plain and quite obvious, but it actually holds some deeper meanings and connotations. The text on the poster says ‘in mind blowing 3D’ hence exactly why jigsaws head has been ‘blown in’ and shatters, but the pieces seem quite solid, like rocks perhaps this could connote that he is hard headed ?
I think the poster has followed a few conventions even though it is quite simple it still has a eye grabbing picture which will obviously entice an audience. Also the infamous logo is there, plus it stands out as it’s the only thing in some sort of colour, even though the colour is blood. And the usual small print text at the bottom of the poster with credits etc.

I would say that there is a mood with this poster and it is a quite eerie and slightly disturbing one. The picture is shocking and certainly catches your attention. It doesn’t necessary evoke fear as such, but a more curious and mysterious vibe. You would think that the background would be black or a dark colour as darkness makes people scared but because the background is WHITE and it still has the effect to make the audience feel uneasy I think it is a good poster. But then again the discomfort that an audience might get from the poster may not be solely on this alone. The hype created with the saw franchise is HUGE, through trailers, merchandise, all types of adverts. So they all play a part.
This poster doesn’t have any names of cast written boldly on it, so evidently it is not the cast they are selling because quite frankly the cast, before saw, weren’t the most successful actors. The only face is of jigsaws who is quite commonly recognisable anyway. I think something they are promoting heavily is possibly the fact that this last film is in 3D. to my knowledge not that many horror movies have taken it to such a level as to entertain and amaze their audience like that.
This is definitely a teaser poster because it was released a while before saw 3D was finally released obviously to create that curiosity of people who see it. Build a fan base and maximise out their profits. This poster is not very revealing at all, it gives no insight to the film, just assuring us that it’ll be ‘Mind blowing’ and we believe it.
Like I mentioned before this poster is a bit controversial with its colour scheme, the fact that there aren’t any dark colours used and its pure white contradicts the dark scary look. So the fact that the poster is high key lighting and yet still is creepy shows the power of the photo and the way it has been constructed. The camera shot is a neutral view but it is a bit to the side so we can get a clear look of the mind that’s blown up. It gives the illusion that the head is rotating and it is definitely a close up with an extremely hard focus. The anchorage ‘in mind blowing 3D’ is in caps to stand out and the ‘saw 3D’ is written in blood and is in a recognisable format with the saw franchise.
There are no ‘MUST SEE’ or ‘AMAZING HORROR’ quotes, so does this perhaps suggest the film isn’t all it is expected to be? Or possibly they don’t need such quotes to sell the film as it is already doing well. Also if they did add these onto the poster it would make it looked cramped and as if they are trying to squeeze everything to get every possible reaction from the audience. The way it is now is probably the best it could be. It looks like it didn’t take much work to make yet it has a good outcome.
Overall I think the poster has been thought about well and ticks a lot of boxes as to what a horror movie poster is meant to fulfil even if they have done it in their own way and broken some of the ‘rules’.
