Saw is a horror franchise distributed by Lions Gate Entertainment that currently consists of six films with a seventh film shot in 3D and scheduled to be released in October 2010 which is anticipated as the last Saw film. The franchise began with the 2003 short film which was created by Australian director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell to pitch it as a potential feature film—which was successfully done in 2004 with the first feature film being released at the Sundance Film Festival and released theatrically the following October. The sequels were directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, David Hackl and Kevin, and have been released subsequently every October, on the Friday before Halloween.
Synopsis: As a deadly battle rages over Jigsaw's brutal legacy, a group of Jigsaw survivors gathers to seek the support of self-help guru and fellow survivor Bobby Dagen, a man whose own dark secrets unleash a new wave of terror.

The trailer for Saw 3D has been advertised for ages, I honestly thought that the film had already been released a while ago, however the film is only due to be released later this month and I think they’ve done this to create a hype, raise everyone’s awareness of the film, get a bin fan base and loads of people who are eagerly for it to be released so when it finally is they will make a lot of money and it will be a box hit.
The film is obviously a gruesome horror, and there are of course quite distinctive features in the trailer that reflect the genre for example;
The story is told manly by the narrative voice over. This is the voice of ‘jigsaw’ the main character in saw, the man behind the mask. He talks in a very deep, husky and mysterious voice; it does create quite a chilly atmosphere. In the trailer we do not see him, just hear his voice, the clips we see are mainly sharp and fast clips of characters trying to escape or in danger and in between these we see some bold text saying ‘ every master craftsman, and all true geniuses, always save their best, for last’. Shown separately on the screen where the commas have been placed. This obviously suggests that this is the last of the saw franchise, and this is possibly the best one ever made. The text is a dirty green color which is overall the theme color for saw, even the lighting throughout the movie makes the film look a dirty dark greeny color. (Connoting the color of vomit, the color of bad smell, the color of something rotting and dead.)
The narrative is in non-linear order, I think it was put together showing possibly some of the best bits to catch the attention of the audience, and bits that will just really make sense in the teaser trailer so it can flow.
The dominate location that is vaguely shown is something of a dark and dingy warehouse/funhouse. Fans of the saw epidemic will understand and be familiar with the settings of the film.
The characters have been portrayed to look like just normal everyday people who have been taken away from their normal everyday surroundings, that’s why they are so panicky and hurried in the teaser trailer. I can tell that they are just regular people because they are dressed very casually and this really fits in with the whole, story idea of saw because when the characters are victimized they do not see it coming and its very unexpected. Like most horrors (esp gruesome ones, or types that include kidnapping etc) this is generally the storyline so it fits in well with the genre conventions.
‘Fear, Suffering, Death’ are themes that you pick up from this teaser trailer, the narrator says this and I think it adds to the horror effect and grabs the concentration of the audience quickly. Also one could say that broken down machinery and weird technology could be considered a theme throughout Saw 3D because the audience sees a lot of messed up cars, home made equipment, knifes, jagged razors, metal cages etc
I would say that the pacing is quite fast, in the sense that they don’t let any clip stay on the screen for too long possibly so not too much is given any and the storyline completely shattered. Everything is quite brief (the trailer is 59 seconds long) and the shots are parallel to the music, the music is quite dramatic and tense, every time the music gets deep the clip changes/the text comes up on the screen. The music isn’t actually that fast paced and is not upbeat to start with, it perhaps is leading up to the quick jumpy yet gripping music that starts up around 33 seconds in, its like the excitement is building up throughout the teaser trailer, like a heart beating. Other sound effects include screams (which I’ve noticed generally is always a woman’s voice), and grunting and struggling noises. And non-diegetic sound that has been edited to seem like diegetic sound i.e a saw/razor.
I think, obviously because the film is 3D it has been edited out that way, however watching it at home on a computer it’s likely you wont get that 3D effect. The trailer begins with and fades out to a black screen, I think it was effectively edited because the black connotes maybe the end and darkness is evidently associated with evil and something frightening.
The teaser trailer generally consists of close ups and medium close up to intensify the emotions of the characters.
In conclusion I think the Saw 3D teaser trailer was very well planned, thought about, and edited. It grabs the attention of the audience and makes you want to watch the film. Its early release was a clever move and as a result has created an extremely eager fan base. The teaser trailer surely does not give away too much about the film and its storyline but it says just enough to make a viewer put two and two together and realize that they want to know what happens next. The color scheme was taking into great consideration too and the editing was on point. Overall I can say it is a good teaser trailer and accomplishes its aims as a teaser trailer should.
